Supporting Staff Wellbeing in Modern Corrections: The Role of Digital Health Resources
How can digital health and wellbeing resources support the needs of correctional staff, as well as the individuals in their care?
Working in corrections brings unique challenges. Staff play a vital role in maintaining safe environments, supporting day-to-day wellbeing and contributing to rehabilitation. Yet the demands of the environment can place considerable pressure on their own health and wellbeing.
While health and wellbeing provision often focuses on the needs of individuals in care, supporting the staff who work alongside them is equally important. Digital health and wellbeing resources offer an opportunity to broaden access to practical information, encourage healthier choices and help make wellbeing support more accessible across correctional settings.

A broader approach to health and wellbeing
Health and wellbeing in modern corrections involves more than responding to immediate needs. It also means creating opportunities for individuals to build healthier habits, develop new skills and take a more active role in their own wellbeing.
For staff, access to relevant health and wellbeing information can also be valuable. Working in a demanding environment makes it important to recognise and support the wellbeing of those responsible for delivering care, maintaining safety and encouraging positive change.
Digital resources can help broaden access to information and activities covering physical fitness, rehabilitation, mental wellbeing, healthy living and education. By making these resources available in a flexible and accessible format, correctional settings can create more opportunities for engagement, both for individuals in care and for staff.
Technology alone is not the answer, but it can form a useful part of a wider approach to health and wellbeing.
Helping staff encourage engagement
Staff are central to the day-to-day experience of individuals within correctional settings. Their interactions, guidance and encouragement can help create opportunities for positive engagement and reinforce the importance of health, wellbeing and rehabilitation.
Digital platforms can support this work by providing staff with relevant resources they can signpost to, helping them identify activities and information suited to different interests and needs.
Having a broad range of content available can also help support conversations around healthier choices, physical activity, mental wellbeing and personal development. Rather than relying on a single approach, staff can draw on resources that offer individuals different ways to engage, at a time and pace that works for them.
This is particularly important in environments where access to activities and support can be affected by operational demands, staffing pressures and the practical challenges of delivering provision consistently.
Using insight to inform wellbeing provision
Digital platforms can also provide valuable insight into how resources are being used.
Engagement data and reporting can help highlight which types of content attract the most interest, how individuals interact with available resources and where there may be opportunities to develop or adapt provision.
For correctional teams, this information can contribute to a better understanding of engagement and help inform decisions about future health and wellbeing activities. It can also support a more considered approach to resource planning, ensuring that provision continues to evolve in response to observed patterns of use.
Data should always be viewed in context. Engagement alone does not demonstrate improved health or rehabilitation outcomes, but it can provide a useful starting point for understanding how resources are accessed and where further support or evaluation may be beneficial.
Supporting the people who support others
At CHW, we believe health and wellbeing in modern corrections should consider the needs of both individuals in care and the staff who support them.
Our EMPOWER platform provides access to a broad range of digital health and wellbeing resources, spanning fitness and rehabilitation, mind and wellbeing, courses and education, healthy living and useful resources.
Designed for correctional environments, EMPOWER helps make relevant content accessible through in-cell, gym and communal settings. It offers individuals opportunities to explore resources independently, while giving staff another way to signpost information and encourage engagement.
We are also continuing to explore how digital provision could better support the wellbeing needs of correctional staff themselves, including through the development of a standalone staff platform designed specifically around their needs.
This reflects a wider ambition to make health and wellbeing resources more accessible across the correctional environment, while recognising that the needs of staff and individuals in care are distinct and deserve thoughtful consideration.
Technology that complements human support
Digital health and wellbeing platforms cannot replace professional support, meaningful relationships or the work staff do every day. Their value lies in how effectively they complement these essential elements.
When implemented thoughtfully, technology can help widen access to relevant resources, provide additional opportunities for engagement and offer insight that can inform the ongoing development of wellbeing provision.
Ultimately, improving health and wellbeing in modern corrections requires a joined-up approach. That means recognising the contribution of staff, understanding the needs of individuals in care and considering how accessible, relevant resources can support both.
Because health and wellbeing in modern corrections should consider everyone within the environment, including the individuals in care and the staff who support them.
CHW is continuing these conversations with colleagues from across the sector at the ICPA 2026 Annual Conference in Belfast, taking place from 25–30 October.
